Mohammad Jalal Abbasi-Shavazi is Professor at the Department of Demography, University of Tehran (UT) and Adjunct Fellow at the Australian National University (ANU). He completed his PhD and a two-year Postdoctoral Fellowship at the ANU Demography Program during 1994-2000. Professor Abbasi-Shavazi is a founding member and Vice-President of the Asian Population Association. Abbasi-Shavazi’s has completed several studies on Iranian fertility transition which have been published in leading demographic journals. In addition to fertility, Abbasi-Shavazi has conducted research on international migration and refugees. Fertility of immigrants has become an important new research area in Europe and Abbasi’s International Migration Review paper is being widely cited as a major source of theory related to this topic. Influenced by his PhD research, he has conducted research on Afghans refugees and migrants in Iran.
